BARBARA KAPETANAKES, PsyD

I am a psychologist living and working in Sleepy Hollow, NY. In addition to photography, my other main hobby is horseback riding.

Photography and art were always passions of mine as a child and teenager, but as with many people, school, starting a career, and life got in the way of my hobbies for awhile. Then in my early 40s I started attending some local photo clubs, entering the competitions, and putting work into the exhibits. I got my "sea legs" back and found that creative outlet that I needed. I now have some of my photos on my office walls, and it reminds me of the importance of hobbies and creativity, even when you love what you do for a living. There always has to be a balance.

A Tender Moment
(Photograph, 11x14)

In January, 2023 I went on a photo weekend to a working cattle ranch in the Phoenix Area. A couple of times a year this particular photographer brings groups, and the cowboys and cowgirls have become used to posing, working for the camera on the farm, and getting into the whole process. This is Rycke and his mare, Wren. Rycke seemed born in the saddle, and his little mare was the sweetest, smartest, and bravest. She was completely bomb-proof and knew her job. When they were trying to rope a calf that got tangled up, Rycke was able to tie off the ropes to Wren's saddle, and she stood stone still, not letting the calf get hurt (or the people). When the calf was released, Wren relaxed. She was a true professional.

The love between Rycke and Wren was palpable all weekend. As a horsewoman, I know the connection between people and horses, and it was very clear that Rycke loved his mare very much, and she him. They were an amazing team.
