Envuelta (Enveloped)
(Intaglio drypoint print on Fabriano Rosaspina paper, 8.5" High x 6" Wide)

I am interested in art as a practice of self-exploration and as an emotional and somatic process that inspires an organic, intelligent “knowing” and intuition to emerge. Printmaking is one of my favorite mediums, and I particularly enjoy using techniques that guide me to my felt sense and help me break through the “fourth wall” of my conscious/analytical mind. Lately I've been exploring the concept of negative space in my drawings and printmaking, as a reflection on the interplay and connection between self and environment. Using this approach, I find the resulting image often expresses moments of contradiction, but interestingly also more coherence of form and movement. “Envuelta”—meaning enveloped, wrapped, covered, or surrounded—is from a series of prints I am currently working on derived from life drawing sessions where I focus on drawing the negative spaces around a figure to reveal its shape, versus drawing the figure itself. This series is a meditation on the ways our environments both support and mold us, bend, stretch, and compress us, nourish and lift us, squash and hold us, forming and informing who we are. It is a meditation as well on the ultimately non dual nature of existence, and the bodymind as a space of both receptivity and presence.
