JACQUELINE FOGEL, MA, MS

My history of artistic work has generally been a self-portrait of me living, moving, and being within the world and the effect the world has had upon me. It has changed over the years and I am sure that as I continue to change, my creative work will continue to evolve as an expression of who I am at a particular point along my journey. It’s an exploration of my particular life challenges expressed through a physical medium, a reflection of my embodied experiences.

As I have aged, I am acutely aware of the changes in my body and how those changes affect my physical structure, posture, sense of self-moving in the world, and general well-being. In this process, my recent bodily experiences have included medical interventions that are new and unfamiliar to me. My work with people using Rosen Method Movement and Essential Motion bring participants into a sense of Embodied Self Awareness: An inner, living, felt sense of our internal environment and function interacting within the external environment. When parts of our bodies no longer work as expected, or as they once had, deep feelings and emotions may arise.

Bare Bones: A Body of Work
(6’ x 2’ x 9”, Mixed Media)

As I have aged, I am acutely aware of the changes in my body and how those changes affected my physical structure, posture, sense of self-moving in the world, and general well-being. When I began teaching Rosen Method Movement, I used a life-size model skeleton to demonstrate how particular moves affected other parts of the body and to demonstrate how bones and joints interconnected to create the whole.

When I first acquired the skeleton in my submission -- Bare Bones: A Body of Work -- I named it Arlan. As my life changed, Arlan began to be the recipient of my experience. Acquiring the remnants of those various medical tests, X-rays, IVs and blood draws, I realized that Arlan was in the process of becoming Jacqarlana, a visual accounting of my journey. Jacqarlana continues to evolve and change as a reflection of my creativity and experiences. It’s an exploration of my particular life challenges expressed through a physical medium, a reflection of my embodied experiences.
